This texture breaks my heart.
It is the remains of one of these two trees. My grandfather planted those mahogany trees so we could have enough shade to be outside. They broke the sidewalk and the township decided to cut them because, at some point, maybe forty years from now, they are going to re-build the sidewalk. As if any township in Puerto Rico had the funds to actually do that.
Anyway. That day I cried. And when Little J asked me why I was sad I explained that cutting trees is very sad because they give us so much and they make our planet so much better. And what did she said? “Aw. We can plant more trees mommy. And then you’ll have another one and not be sad.” BECAUSE MY THREE YEAR OLD IS WISER THAN THE TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE.
I held on to a piece of on trunk of one of the trees in hopes of someday using it as a side table or converting it into another useful piece. Of course, that piece of trunk does not provide enough shade for us to go play outside as we did before, but at least I have something.

As a hobbyist woodworker I would have been all over the place asking them to leave me the wood because Mahogany is by far my favourite would to work with.
Still it is sad when trees we have become attached to are brought down. Hopeful Baby J is right and you can plant a few new ones somewhere. Kids are wiser then we think, aren’t they?

I was most upset about the way they did not notified us so we couldn’t make arrangements for woodworkers to come and take the pieces, it was so much wood! They on the other hand carried about four pieces of trunk, perfect ones. I tried to message as many people as I could but it was a weekday and people were working, plus they’d had to find a flat bed last minute. I bet an entire bar set could have been made. And I’ve dreamed of a wood bar set!

Mahogany is beautiful wood (and expensive). Sorry you are missing the shad of the tree:( This week I went back and forth between the course texture of brick and the smooth and soft grassy surface of the mountains:) You choose:):)

Cutting down a mature mahogany tree seems a criminal act whatever the excuse. My condolences.
